The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation
was established in 1978 to promote and encourage
appreciation of excellence in
the arts and to enhance cultural life
internationally through the support of art exhibitions, scholarship, and
the endowment of galleries at major museums around the
world. The Foundation's mission is also to support
medical research and clinical care, especially for women. Its philanthropic activities center on New York City and Southern California.
In the arts, the Foundation organizes and circulates traveling exhibitions of its superb collection of Rodin bronzes. To date, exhibitions have been seen in more than 160 venues in the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, and Singapore. The Foundation also funds exhibitions organized by major institutions and assists with publications on Rodin.
In 1969 B. Gerald Cantor established the Rodin Research Fund at Stanford University to support original research, travel, and publications by Ph.D. candidates who studied Rodin and modern sculpture. These Cantor Fellows now occupy curatorial and professional positions at major museums and universities, continuing their Rodin-related research, teaching, and publishing.
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation's arts patronage can be seen in galleries, sculpture gardens, endowed curatorial positions, and scholarship programs at such institutions as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the College of the Holy Cross.
Equally as important as its commitment to cultural activities
is the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation's support for medical research and institutions. Of particular interest is health care for women, with an emphasis on the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The Foundation has made significant gifts to endow new patient facilities, laboratories, and research fellowships at hospitals and medical centers. Major gifts have been provided to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Strang Cancer Prevention Center, the UCLA Medical Center and the Discovery Eye Foundation.
Under Iris Cantor's leadership the Foundation
is also supporting facilities, scholarships, and programs for students, major grants to the Fulfillment Fund, De Witt Clinton High School in Brooklyn, New York, Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, New York.
