abstract Used to describe art that does not represent its subject in a natural or realistic way.
 
archaic Generally, archaic refers to art that seems old fashioned and more traditional for its time.
 
bronze A type of metal, composed of copper and tin, that is often used to make sculptures. When heated,
bronze becomes liquid and can then be used to fill a mold that will produce a very strong and
durable sculpture.
 
casting The process of making sculpture by pouring a liquid material (such as bronze or plaster) into a mold.
The finished product is called a cast.
 
chisel A sharp-edged metal tool used to shape materials such as wood or stone. The chisel must be held
at an angle and hit with a mallet in order to carve the solid surface.
 
enlargement Describes a sculpture that has been reproduced in a larger size from the original model.
 
foundry A workshop where sculptures are cast.
 
maquette A small model made by a sculptor as a preparation for a larger finished work.
 
medium The material that an artist works with.
 
modeling Making a sculpture using a soft flexible substance such as clay or wax.
 
modern Generally refers to recent or present times, or a sense of something being new and contemporary.
 
monumental Something that is very large in size or outstanding in significance.
 
patina The outer coloring of a sculpture.
 
relief A term for sculptures that have a flat background and are not completely three-dimensional.
