Perhaps Rodin's earliest known sculpture is a bust of his father, Jean-Baptiste Rodin, first modeled in clay in 1860. Now cast in bronze, it presents the elder Rodin in the manner of a republican from Roman times. His face lacks his characteristic beard and mustache, his hair is closely cropped, and no clothing appears, as the neck and shoulders merge into a base reminiscent of the traditional antique style.
