Rodin completed many studies to determine the character and stance of each burgher before deciding on the figures for the final monument. Among these were head studies, focusing on the depth of emotion captured in their faces. The Monumental Head of Pierre de Wiessant is an enlarged version of the final head study of one of the two youngest burghers. Following his brother Jacques, Pierre de Wiessant was the fourth brave citizen to offer himself as hostage to the king. Rodin was interested in exploring the depiction of youth in the face of death.
