One fragment Rodin was particularly fascinated with was the human hand. He modeled thousands of unattached hands, ranging from naturalistic studies to powerful symbolic compositions. He was attracted to the diverse forms of hands, and he modeled many of them in rapid clay sketches, attempting to capture the essence of their fluid nature.
Large Right Clenched Hand is an example of Rodin's interest in hands afflicted with paralyzing diseases, such as arthritis or "claw hand", which often have a theatrical nature expressing pain or anger.
