Originally conceived as a figure for The Gates of Hell, Rodin began exhibiting the figure of Meditation on its own in 1885. By 1889 the figure was being incorporated into Rodin's Monument to Victor Hugo, although now on a much larger scale. Meditation continued to undergo several changes during the evolution of the monument. At the Salon of 1897, Rodin exhibited an armless version as part of the plaster model. Meditation has also been called The Inner Voice, after Les Voix Intérieurs, a collection of lyric poems by Victor Hugo. Rodin continued to use the figure adapting it for such works as The Siren, Constellation, and Christ and the Magdalen.
