Late in life Rodin took great interest in the study of dancers as part of his desire to capture spontaneous, natural movement. Rodin asked dancers to perform in his studio while he rapidly modeled clay studies in an attempt to achieve animation in static sculptures. Rodin believed that if two positions were sufficiently close in time for the last to follow out the first, their fusion would give the impression of movement. Rodin's Dance Movements A-H were attempts to put this theory into practice. Dance Movement 'B' is from this series; however, this piece also shows Rodin's interest in repeating a figure to create a new composition.
