Cupid and Psyche is one of several groups of amorous couples inspired by the poses of dancers who modeled for Rodin in 1885. The title, derived from classical mythology, was possibly an attempt by Rodin to give an edifying context to this highly erotic pair. The plaster model of this sculpture is located in the Musée Rodin, Paris. The Cantor Collection bronze is inscribed by the artist and was exhibited at the 1901 Venice Biennale in a room reserved exclusively for Rodin's works.
