Rodin entered and won a civic competition from the French city of Calais for a monument to commemorate the heroic and patriotic act of six citizens (burghers) during the Hundred Years War. In his time, his monument transformed what such memorial sculpture could be, much as Maya Lin’s Vietnam War Memorial transformed such memorial sculpture in our time.
The exhibition included maquettes, figures, and details of the individual figures.
