Rodin’s Monument to the Burghers of Calais from the B. Gerald Cantor Collections

Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation / Foundation / Rodin’s Monument to the Burghers of Calais from the B. Gerald Cantor Collections

Rodin won a civic competition held by  the French city of Calais, for a monument to commemorate the heroic and patriotic act of six citizens (burghers) during the Hundred Years War. His monument transformed what such memorial sculpture could be, much as Maya Lin’s Vietnam War Memorial transformed memorial sculpture in our time.

The Cantor exhibition included maquettes, figures, and pieces derived from the individual figures.
